FAQ
Exhaust & Duct Cleaning Questions
What Sydney venue managers ask us most about ductwork.
Commercial kitchen exhaust cleaning can include accessible exhaust-fan housings and blades, duct connections, horizontal ductwork, vertical risers, internal duct surfaces and existing access-panel areas.
The exact scope depends on the exhaust-system design, grease and carbon build-up, roof or ceiling access, existing access panels and site safety requirements. HygieneXperts confirms the sections included before the work begins.
There is no single cleaning interval suitable for every commercial kitchen.
The appropriate frequency depends on cooking volume, operating hours, cooking methods, grease production, previous inspection findings and measured build-up throughout the exhaust system. High-volume kitchens using fryers, chargrills, woks or other grease-producing cooking methods may require more frequent inspection and cleaning.
AIRAH recommends establishing cleaning frequency from actual grease accumulation and the operating history of the system rather than relying on one universal timetable.
Pricing is based on the actual system and access requirements rather than a standard fixed price.
We consider factors such as:
• exhaust-fan type and location;
• amount of grease and carbon build-up;
• duct length and configuration;
• horizontal and vertical duct sections;
• existing access panels;
• roof or high-level access;
• confined-space considerations;
• isolation requirements; and
• working hours and site restrictions.
A physical site inspection may be required before an accurate scope-based quotation can be provided.
Yes. Suitable rooftop commercial kitchen exhaust fans can be assessed and cleaned where safe access can be established.
Depending on the fan design and agreed scope, cleaning may include accessible fan blades, fan housing, surrounding duct connections and suitable external surfaces around the motor body.
Roof condition, edge risks, weather, electrical isolation and working-at-height requirements are assessed before the work proceeds. HygieneXperts does not undertake electrical repairs as part of routine fan cleaning.
Yes. Accessible vertical risers, horizontal duct sections and other suitable commercial grease ductwork can be included in the cleaning scope.
The team may work progressively through existing access points using suitable scraping, brushing, vacuum and other duct-cleaning equipment. Long runs, bends, restricted ceiling spaces or multi-storey risers may require additional access or specialist controls.
We do not claim that an entire duct system can always be cleaned from one opening.
If existing access points do not provide adequate access to a duct section, additional access may be recommended.
AIRAH's commercial kitchen exhaust guidance specifically recognises access as an important consideration for inspection and cleaning of ductwork and system components.
Any additional access-panel installation should be separately assessed and agreed because the duct construction, location, system requirements and suitable installation method need to be considered. This is covered by our Commercial Kitchen Duct Access Panel Installation service.
Not necessarily. Many commercial ducts can be cleaned using access panels and specialist cleaning equipment without a person entering the duct.
If physical entry is being considered, the duct and task must first be assessed to determine whether confined-space requirements apply. Where they do, appropriate procedures may include trained personnel, risk assessment, entry controls, atmospheric monitoring, communication and emergency arrangements.
A worker should not simply crawl into restricted ductwork without the required assessment and controls. SafeWork NSW requires confined-space risks to be identified and appropriately controlled where confined-space entry applies.
A powered exhaust fan must be appropriately isolated before cleaning work is carried out around moving or electrically powered components.
Depending on the equipment and site procedures, this may involve an established isolation and lockout/tagout process to prevent unexpected start-up. Simply turning a normal operating switch off should not automatically be treated as sufficient isolation.
SafeWork NSW specifically identifies isolation and lockout/tagout procedures as important when workers perform cleaning, maintenance or repair activities on plant.
HygieneXperts does not represent routine exhaust cleaning as electrical work. Electrical faults or repairs should be referred to an appropriately licensed professional.
Yes. Before-and-after photographs and an Exhaust Fan & Duct Cleaning Service Report can be provided where included in the agreed scope.
The report may record the areas cleaned, photographic evidence, visible system condition, access limitations and any additional cleaning or maintenance concerns identified during the work.
This documentation can support internal maintenance and facility-management records, but it should not be described as a statutory fire-safety or compliance certificate unless separately issued by an appropriately authorised person.
Not necessarily. Cleaning removes accessible grease, carbon and other build-up, but it does not repair electrical or mechanical faults.
If an exhaust fan has problems such as abnormal noise, vibration, damaged components, wiring faults or motor failure, the issue may require assessment by an appropriately licensed electrician, mechanical technician or ventilation specialist.
HygieneXperts can report visible concerns identified during cleaning, but professional cleaning should not be presented as a guarantee that a faulty fan will operate correctly afterwards.
